Leeds Rhinos suffered a double blow on the opening night of Super League XXI, losing both the match and new captain Danny McGuire as Warrington Wolves claimed a hard-fought 12-10 win at Headingley.
A new look Rhinos side looked anxious in the opening minutes and were dealt a severe early blow when McGuire took a knock to the knee, which eventually forced him off at half-time by which point they were 6-0 down after a Chris Sandow try.
Brad Singleton powered through to pull the sides level after the break, and Ryan Hall went over 10 minutes later to open up a four point lead for the Rhinos.
However Kevin Penny found space out wide in the 68th minute after a precise kick from Sandow and touched down to give Warrington a narrow lead with Kurt Gidley's conversion.
The Rhinos could have snatched a dramatic draw as Zak Hardaker's penalty drifted wide.
Leeds coach Brian McDermott said: "It was a tough game to start with. There were three or four things that wanted to be good at and we were so there were more positives .
Both teams defended well but we probably lacked a bit of fluency and cohesion when we attacked their try-line."
He added on Hardaker: "People miss goals. It will happen. It was not a sitter but one of the easier ones to get."
Opposite number Tony Smith commented: "It was outstanding and it needed to be because we got tested.
"They threw a lot at us and dominated in terms of field position and ball.
"There will be some weary and tired boys tonight but the win was well deserved in terms of effort and reward. There were some fantastic parts of our play, most of it defenive
