Five Nights at Freddys is a 2014 indie point-and-click survival horror video game developed by Scott Cawthon. The game centers on the fictional pizza restaurant Freddy Fazbears Pizza, where the player must act as a night security guard, defending themself from the malfunctioning animatronic animal characters by tracking their movement through the facility using security cameras.\r

Five Nights at Freddys was first released via Desura on August 8, 2014. On August 20, 2014, after it was approved by the services crowdsourcing platform Greenlight, Five Nights at Freddys was also released via Steam. Ports have been released for Android and iOS.\r

The game was praised by critics for being a unique take on the survival horror genre, with a particular emphasis on its simplistic design, along with how its gameplay mechanics and aesthetics contributed to an overall feeling of fear and paranoia. Five Nights at Freddys was the top-selling game on Desura for the week ending August 18, 2014, and the game became the subject of a number of popular Lets Play videos on YouTube. Two sequels have been released, Five Nights at Freddys 2 on November 10, 2014, and Five Nights at Freddys 3 on March 2, 2015.\r

Set in the early 1990s, the main character, whose name is later revealed to be Mike Schmidt,[4] has started a job working as a night watch security guard at the restaurant Freddy Fazbears Pizza (a pastiche of restaurants like Chuck E. Cheeses).[3][5] A voicemail message left by Mikes predecessor explains that the animatronic animal characters used at the restaurant, Freddy Fazbear, Bonnie, Chica, and the disused Foxy, are able to roam freely around it at night, because if they were left off for too long, their servo motors would lock up. He also adds that the animatronics were no longer allowed to roam freely during the day following an incident referred to as the Bite of 87, which apparently involved the loss of someones frontal lobe. The employee warns Mike that if one of the robots encounters a human, they will automatically assume that it is an endoskeleton that is not in costume yet, and forcefully stuff them into a spare mechanical Freddy Fazbear costume, killing the person in the process.[6]\r

Newspaper clippings in the background of one of the scenes reveal that the restaurant was site to the disappearances of five children whose bodies were never found, after a man dressed as one of the animatronics lured them into a back room and reportedly murdered them. Later, the restaurant received complaints that the animatronics began to smell foul and became stained with blood and mucus around the eyes and mouth, with one customer comparing them to reanimated carcasses.\r

Cada animatrónico tiene una forma animal que inspira su nombre en inglés (Foxy es un zorro, Chica es un pollo, Bonnie es un conejo y Freddy es un oso) y un patrón de movimiento que se repite cíclicamente fuera del campo de visión del personaje. La velocidad de los personajes se incrementa a medida que el jugador avance cada noche.\r

Bonnie es quien sale primero y es el que más suele moverse y acercarse a la puerta izquierda de la oficina; mientras que Chica suele salir después de Bonnie y estar en la puerta lateral derecha. A partir de la segunda noche, es posible que Foxy pueda dejar su puesto llamado «Pirate Cove» (aunque rara vez lo hace en la primera noche si no se revisa para nada la pirate cove) y correr por el pasillo izquierdo de la oficina. En este caso, el jugador debe cerrar inmediatamente la puerta izquierda si ve el pasillo izquierdo, haciendo que éste golpee la puerta un par de veces. El oso Freddy es el último personaje en salir, ya que tiende a deambular por la pizzería en las últimas noches del juego y situarse en zonas oscuras, pero sale pocas veces. Además, existe una versión alternativa de este personaje llamada Golden Freddy que no aparece ante las cámaras, sólo se muestra ante el jugador si éste observa un póster en una determinada habitación. Morir a manos de Golden Freddy no sólo hace que acabe la partida, también hace que el juego se congele. Para evitarlo, el jugador tiene que acceder a las cámaras de seguridad cuando éste aparezca en la pantalla.
