PLAYA DEL CARMEN, MEXICO — An American man is facing a criminal homicide investigation in Mexico after his girlfriend was found strangled in their vacation home.

The Missourian reports that 36-year-old Missouri resident Tamra Turpin was found dead on Wednesday in a condo in the Mexican resort city of Playa del Carmen.

Turpin had rented the condo with her 59-year-old boyfriend John Loveless, who is being investigated as a suspect by police.

Forensic examination conducted on Turpin's body indicated she had died of asphyxia by strangulation. But Loveless allegedly told the woman's family that she'd been taken to the hospital for seizures and later died at the condo after being released.

Loveless, a businessman and attorney from Franklin County, Missouri, was detained by Mexican federal authorities at the Cancun airport while attempting to board a flight to Atlanta.

According to Fox News, Turpin's family has set up a GoFundMe account to raise the $8,000 needed to bring her body back to the U.S.
