LAS VEGAS — A California woman was found dead on Sunday night in a laundry chute at the D hotel-casino in Las Vegas, an incident the police have defined as a suspicious death, the Las Vegas Review Journal reported.

Kalli Medina-Brown was in Las Vegas with her husband and a small group of friends to celebrate her 27th birthday when, on Sunday at about 2.30 a.m., she was found unresponsive by staff at the D hotel-casino in downtown Las Vegas.

It is still unclear how she fell down the laundry chute, but Tony Fratis, the woman's grandfather, said in an interview to 13 Action News that he excludes a suicide.

"Everybody goes to Vegas to have fun. There's no way it was suicide. There's no way in the world," Fratis said.

Detectives told Medina-Brown's mother that a video from the hotel showed her daughter separating from her husband, walking in the opposite directions and then entering the maid's closet. That's when the video went dark, 13 Action News reported.

Las Vegas Fire Department crews arrived at the scene, but nothing could be done to save the woman.

The Las Vegas Review Journal reports that homicide detectives ruled the nature of her death as not criminal. The coroner will rule whether it was a suicide or an accident.
