The small animal was passed around a crowd of smartphone-toting beachgoers in Santa Teresita, Argentina after being pulled out of the ocean.
When they were done and the dolphin had died, the carcass was abandoned on the beach.
Experts believe the mammal died of dehydration, as the species is not able to survive for long out of water.
A spokesperson for the Wildlife Foundation noted, “This incident should help the public understand the urgent need to return these dolphins to the sea when they get close to the shore."
