HERTFORD, NORTH CAROLINA — A North Carolina mom was mauled to death on February 10th by a dog she adopted just a week prior to the incident.
Suzanne Story, 36, adopted the 100-pound pitbull and boxer mix, Buddy, for free in Virginia after spotting an advertisement in The Virginian-Pilot newspaper.
Buddy's former owners, Cheryl and Carl Davino, had to give him up because they were moving to a location where it would not accommodate Buddy and two other small dogs the couple have, reported The Virginian-Pilot.
The Davinos brought Buddy to Story's Snug Harbor home and from that day on, he was her "big baby," according to a Facebook post by Story's daughter, Cheyanne.
However, on Wednesday, Buddy attacked his owner while she was cleaning his crate, said Story's sister and roommate, Robin Ross, who found them mid-attack, reported The Virginian-Pilot. Ross threw the dog off of her sister and locked him in the bathroom. However, he managed to break through the door and attacked Story again.
Afraid the dog would attack Story's 17-year-old daughter, Ross ran out of the house with her and called 911 and their mother, Debbie Brown, who lives down the street, according to The Virginian-Pilot.
Story died at around 12:30 p.m. on the way to the hospital, Perquimans County Sheriff Eric Tilley said to The Virginian-PIlot.
The Davinos, who heard about the incident the day after, said to newspaper that they were shocked to hear the news because Buddy was good with people and children and showed no signs of aggression and violence.
Story's step-father Randy Brown, however, said in a Facebook post that he holds the Davinos responsible and accused them of lying about the dog's true nature.
"I think they had a problem with the dog and didn't know how to handle it, and they were just trying to get rid of it, and they did," Brown told 13 News Now, noting that the move resulted in a death.
Buddy was euthanized on February 11th, Perquimans County Sheriff Eric Tilley said to The New York Daily News. Story leaves behind two daughters, Cheyanne and Miranda.
