FARGO, NORTH DAKOTA — A North Dakota police officer was shot and killed on Wednesday evening while responding to a domestic violence call.
Fargo officer Jason Moszer was responding to the incident when he was struck by the suspect's gunfire.
Police records show that a call was received at around 7 p.m. from the son of Marcus Schumacher saying that his father has fired shots at his wife.
Officer Moszer was one of several police officers in attendance and was setting up a perimeter around the property when he was shot shortly after exiting his patrol vehicle.
Residents later called in to report an officer on the ground in the alley facing the Schumacher residence.
SWAT team members then used a Bearcat armored vehicle to extract officer Moszer and take him to hospital.
The 12-hour standoff then ensued during which shots were fired before Schumacher's body was found inside the residence. It is yet unclear whether the fatal wound was self-inflicted.
Officer Moszer, a six-year veteran of the department, died at around 12:45 p.m. with his family present.
Valley News Live reported that Schumacher, 49, had a criminal record and served 5 years in jail in 1991 after being found guilty of negligent homicide.
