MANHATTAN — A New Jersey woman survived after jumping off a bridge in New York and falling 200 feet into the water on Tuesday evening, Port Authority spokesman Joe Pentangelo said.

At the time, New Square Hatzolah EMS members were searching for the body of a Rockland County man who had jumped from the bridge a week earlier. At around 5 p.m., a member of the group saw the woman jump off the George Washington Bridge, said Heshy Gottdiner, a New Square resident volunteering with the group, to NJ.com.

Scott Koen, a man commissioned by the EMS group, moved his boat, the Lt. Michael P. Murphy, toward the woman. The woman was on her back, waving her arms while trying to stay afloat, Koen said to NJ.com.

Koen jumped into the water and tied a rope around the woman when she failed to hold onto the rope that was thrown to her from the boat, the Daily Voice reported. Divers and EMS pulled the woman onto the boat and Koen steered the vessel toward the Manhattan shore.

"I just nosed up and police and EMS came aboard," Koen said to the Daily Voice. "They packaged her up and Marine One transferred her to land."

The woman had fallen 200 feet into the Hudson River, but only suffered a severe leg injury, Port Authority officials said.

"Her left foot was basically fractured," Gottdiner said to Nj.com. "Part of the toe even looked like it was hanging off."

The 25-year-old woman from Somerset County is recovering at St. Luke's-Roosevelt Hospital.

Cases where people who survive jumping into the Hudson from the bridge are rare. In 2015, 18 people killed themselves by jumping off the George Washington Bridge, reported NJ.com.
