The concept was good but the casting was not. All were sent home except Mr. Ed who remained in his stall. The casting of the "voice: of Mr. Ed was "Rocky Lane, a 1940's singing cowboy from Republic studios who took up residence at the creator's home on the sofa". said Alan Young in an interview. He didn't get credit for the voice because at first he didn't want to be associated with a talking horse but when the show caught on, he wanted credit but was denied it. The producer of the show said if any one (including children) knew who the voice was it would take away the magic of the show.
