Bafetimbi Gomis collapses on pitch Tottenham 3 2 Swansea Bafetimbi Gomis wanted to play stretchered off Swansea city’s French striker Bafetimbi Gomis was stretchered off after collapsing on the pitch in the early stages of his side’s Premier League game at Tottenham Hotspur. The France international, 29, was given oxygen by medical staff after falling to the ground shortly after Spurs took a seventh-minute lead, but appeared to be conscious and talking as he was taken from the pitch at White Hart Lane.
Gomis has a history of collapsing, having fainted three times during his spell with former club Lyon. Swans boss Garry Monk moved to reassure concerned onlookers about Gomis’s health after the game. “Bafetimbi Gomis is fine,” Monk said on Wednesday. “He went to hospital as a precaution, but he is fine. That’s the main thing.”
A Swansea spokesperson at White Hart Lane said: “He is fine. He is in the medical room. It is something we have been aware of it is something called a vasovagal condition. We have always been aware of it and it has happened before. He has had all the medical and cardiology tests with us.” White Hart Lane was the scene of a dramatic episode in March 2012 when Bolton Wanderers midfielder Fabrice Muamba collapsed on the pitch after suffering a cardiac arrest during an FA Cup tie.
Although his heart stopped for 78 minutes, he made a full recovery, but had to retire from professional football later that year. The incident marred an otherwise entertaining encounter. Determined to make up for their lacklustre League Cup final loss against Chelsea on Sunday, Mauricio Pochettino’s side took a quick lead through Nacer Chadli. South Korea midfielder Ki Sung-yueng equalised after Gomis’s collapse. But Ryan Mason restored Tottenham’s lead and Andros Townsend added the third soon after.
