When Claude-François Poullart des Places, son of one of the wealthiest business men in France, decided to “cross the street”, he established his first community by leaving his comfortable status as a resident seminary student with the Jesuits in Louis-le-Grand College, Paris, and going to share the life of the poor seminarians whom he had begun to help by paying their tuitions and renting rooms for them in an humble four storey boarding house nearby.
