Let's say this film project actually is not a hoax... The fact that Fiennes is performing as Michael (and his cavalier attitude about it) is indeed problematic; however, the write-up of the short film as being 'comedic' and 'tongue and cheek' are just as problematic- and not something people are speaking to. Again, i read Zadie Smith's short story based on the 2011 fictional reportage of the events inspiring this film (Correction- the Smith piece was published in the June 8 edition of the New Yorker. Also, Michael traveled to New Jersey to the Cascio family the day of September 11, 2001). To treat it as 'tongue in cheek' and 'comedic' clearly does not captured the nuanced relationship between the three characters in the story- three people trying to make sense of tragedy, all while trying to find human-ness within each other in a society which treats celebrities as products.
