WICHITA, KANSAS — A mother’s post went viral on Facebook after she accused a sales clerk at a Dillard’s in Wichita, Kansas, of body-shaming her daughter when she told her to wear spanx.
In the post, Megan Harris explains to the clerk how beautiful her daughter is, that “girls of all ages, shapes and sizes are perfect because that is how God made them,” and that telling someone she is not perfect can be damaging.
Surely, being a young girl in a society obsessed with being thin is hard enough that she does not need a sales clerk telling her she’s too fleshy or that she shouldn’t eat as much.
But to be fair, we don’t exactly know how the conversation went. Maybe the clerk just wanted to be helpful by suggesting that if the girl wanted to feel more comfortable in such a tight, body hugging dress she would have had to wear spanx, which in fact does shape the body in ways that even many thin women wear it.
Maybe she didn’t mean to body-shame anyone, but just failed to address the issue in the right way?
What is your opinion on this?
Was the mother right to defend her daughter against such damaging remarks regarding standards of beauty? Or was she overreacting?
