LONDON — An inquiry launched by the British government into the death of a former KGB agent who had defected to Britain concluded after three years of work on Thursday.

The 328-page resulting report suggests that ex-Russian KGB agent Alexander Litvinenko's 2006 death was linked to the Kremlin and involved two assassins from Russia's Federal Security Service and a cup of cold green tea.

According to the inquiry, a pair of assassins, Andrei Lugovoi and Dimitry Kovtun, carried out the murder probably under orders from the Kremlin. Both denounce the allegations, calling the claims "absurd" and "falsified," reported the Washington Post.

Litvinenko, 43, died after drinking a cup of green tea at London's Millennium Hotel that was laced with polonium, a radioactive isotope a trillion times more toxic than cyanide. The two assassins had reportedly invited Litvinenko to the hotel's Pine Bar on Nov. 1, 2006 to discuss a business deal.

The Guardian reports that Lugovoi and Kovtun had previously lured Litvinenko to another business meeting where they had tipped polonium into his glass of water. However, Litvinenko didn't touch his drink during the first meeting.

Polonium emits radioactive alpha particles that are easily absorbed by other materials. This radioactivity allowed investigators to trace the trail of chemical evidence throughout London and to Pine Bar.

Traces of polonium 210 were also found in many places the alleged assassins had visited during their stay in London, including; the bar's bathroom; their hotel rooms; a board room where the first meeting occurred; a soccer stadium where the two had watched a game and; the airplane that transported them back to Russia.

According to the Washington Post, Kovtun is now a businessman and Lugovoi has a seat in the Russian parliament.
