Rajon Rondo is headed to the Sacramento Kings for one year and $10 million, as first reported by Yahoo Sports Marc Spears and confirmed by CBSSports.coms Ken Berger. The Kings have been rumored to be interested in the point guard for quite some time.
Rondo and Sacramento are an odd pairing. The organization is quite chaotic at the moment, with head coach George Karl and franchise center DeMarcus Cousins at odds. Introducing another strong personality like Rondo will be, uh, interesting, but its worth noting hes good friends with Kings forward Rudy Gay.
The one-year deal makes sense for Rondo for a couple of reasons. The obvious one is that the salary cap will go up next summer, so this gives him a chance to rebuild his reputation before potentially getting a raise. The second is that signing with Sacramento long-term seems like a dangerous idea, given all thats going on there.
This makes the Kings more talented, but, as we saw in Rondos Dallas Mavericks tenure, fit is sometimes more important. Karl wants to run, and Rondo usually prefers a slower pace. Rondo needs to be surrounded by shooters, and Sacramento doesnt have a ton of them, though Marco Belinelli -- who Rondo asked for, according to Yahoo Sports -- will help.
For now, this team still kind of feels like a collection of random parts. Its impossible to accurately assess this until we see what Kings VP Vlade Divacs next moves are. I suppose its worth a shot, though.
