Plot: Shankar (Raj Kiran), works in a National Bank and wishes to impress his colleague, Sudha (Sarika). A flash-back of his entire life, right from his birth, as the only son of a servant in a once-wealthy Nagpur - based family. The family consisted of Madhu (Shabana Azmi), her brother, Sunder (Gautam), and her widowed mother (Sulabha deshpande). Madhu comes in contact with Ram Nath (Vinod Mehra). The two are attracted to each other resulting in Ram proposing to Madhu. Soon, Madhu accepts his proposal and shifts in with Ram to live with his parents, and sister, Sharda (Madhu Malini). Madhu and Ram aborts a child, while Sharda gets married to wealthy Velaytiram (Asrani). Madhu's family is hit with financial crisis and hence they shift in with the Nath's. Both, Sharda and Madhu expect a baby at the same time and give birth to a boy and girl respectively. Madhu's mother is suffering through illness and is very critical. In order to conduct Sharda'a wedding, Ram had taken a loan which he is unable to repay. Money is now required for Madhu's mothers treatment and to continue the education of Sunder and Shankar. In all this fuss and stress, misunderstandings grow and Ram asks Madhu to either leave her family and move to Mumbai with his family or he will take his daughter and leave Madhu behind with her family. Madhu now has to choose between her family and her husbands family.
