JIANGXI, CHINA — Video footage of what appears to be the execution of a man in China has emerged online.

The unverified film captures the last moments of the unidentified man's life, as he is led into a field by police officers and shot.

The man is forced to kneel down and is shot once in the back of the head, appearing to die instantly.

Then a policeman grabs the man's hands and places them behind his back, before the executioner fires another shot to the back of his head.

A photographer stands over the man's corpse and takes photos as the executioner reloads his gun a couple of feet away.

Almost out of view of the camera, the executioner then fires another shot into the back of the man's head.

According to a post on Chinese social media site QQ, the video was filmed in Yushan in July last year. Yushan is a county in China's southeastern Jiangxi province.

Human rights organizations estimate China carries out thousands of executions a year, according to Cornell Law School.

China reserves the death penalty for a host of crimes, including murder, treason and terrorist-related offenses, according to Cornell Law School. However, lesser offenses including burglary and assault may also result in capital punishment.
