The 2016 Golden Globes host drew jeers during his opening monologue Sunday after making a controversial joke about Caitlyn Jenner and the transgender movement.
"Suggesting a joke about Caitlin Jenner is automatically transphobic is like suggesting a joke about Bill Cosby is automatically racist," he tweeted, invoking the name of the disgraced comedian .
On Sunday, the repeat Globes host joked during the opening monologue that he was planning to be nicer this year.
"I've changed.
Not as much as Bruce Jenner, obviously – now Caitlyn Jenner, of course.
What a year she's had.
She became a role model for trans people everywhere," he said, saying she's showed "great bravery."
Shortly after the awards show, Gervais took to Instagram to post an image of himself onstage during the show, making it clear he was making no apologies for his envelope-pushing remarks.
