LOS MOCHIS, MEXICO — Mexico Attorney General Arely Gomez announced on Friday that fugitive drug lord Joaquin "El Chapo" Guzman had been captured by marines in a pre-dawn raid on Friday morning.
A statement from the Mexican Navy revealed that in late 2015, Mexican authorities received a tipoff from a resident in Los Mochis, Sinaloa state, that armed men were active in a house in that city. After conducting surveillance on the house for over a month, authorities concluded that El Chapo was present and Mexican marines raided the location before dawn on Friday. Gunmen in the house fired at the marines.
A gun battle ensued, during which El Chapo and one of his top assassins, Ivan Gastelim, escaped through the sewers. Marines killed five gunmen and arrested six. One marine was injured. Marines also recovered four vehicles, two of which were armored, nine rifles and a rocket propelled grenade launcher.
Meanwhile, El Chapo and Gastelim resurfaced some distance away where they were able to steal a vehicle and attempted to escape. But they were intercepted by the marines, who arrested both El Chapo and Gastelim, then took them to a hotel while the marines awaited reinforcements.
El Chapo has been transported back to the Altiplano prison according to the Attorney General. It is the same prison which he escaped from six months ago. The escape and El Chapo's ability to evade capture had been a major embarrassment for the Mexican government.
