LECOMPTON, KANSAS — A parrot at the Tallgrass Parrot Sanctuary in Kansas is garnering attention for her new-found fashion sense.
Javi the parrot, who arrived at the sanctuary last September, suffers from anxiety. Her condition led to over preening, in which birds pluck out their feathers, leaving the bird almost completely featherless.
When she arrived at the sanctuary, animal care staffers posted her photo on Facebook and said that Javi smelled like "stale cigarette butts and rotted garbage."
The sanctuary outfitted the parrot in sweaters by Sock Buddy, a Canadian company that turns ordinary socks into bird-sized clothes to help regulate body temperatures and prevent poor feather growth and weight loss in over-preened birds.
Javi, formerly known as "Hobby," was renamed by the sanctuary. "No living being should be someone's hobby," the staff wrote on the Tallgrass Parrot Sanctuary's Facebook account.
Tallgrass Parrot Sanctuary rehabilitates more than 30 parrots of all sizes, as well as other animals including pigs, geese, dogs, tortoises and more.
Javi is said to be recovering well.
