EAST RUTHERFORD, NEW JERSEY — The New England Patriots lost the game against the New York Jets on Sunday, even after winning the overtime coin toss, because they chose to kickoff the ball and give the Jets possession and a chance to score.

Patriots special teams captain Matthew Slater told ESPN after the game: "Before the toss, Coach told us if we won the toss we wanted to kick off. Obviously as a player you ask three or four times to double check because you want to make sure you get it right. ... The only confusion was whether or not we got to choose which direction we got to kick the ball."

Since they chose to kickoff, they didn't' get to decide which side of the field they wanted to defend. For the opening coin toss of professional football games, the winning team can chose to kick, and pick the side they want to kick to.

The Jets ended up scoring the game winning touchdown at MetLife Stadium in the first play of the extra period bringing the score to 26-20. Regarding teh controversial decision to kickoff, Belicheck told the Boston Globe that he "thought it was the best thing to do." His team is still eligible to make the playoffs, despite the overtime blunder.
