HOUSTON — A Texas father who pulled a gun on medical staff because he disagreed with the decision to turn off his son's life support was released from jail recently after the charges against him were reduced.
George Pickering's son, George III, was in a coma at Tomball Regional Medical Center in Houston in January following a massive stroke when hospital staff decided to order a "terminal wean," or the switching off of his life support.
The authorities had also already notified an organ donation service when George senior decided to take direct action.
George, who admits he was drunk, pulled out a 9mm handgun and threatened hospital staff, saying he would kill them all.
Although he was quickly disarmed by another of his sons, the police were called and a four-hour standoff with a SWAT team ensued. During the siege, George junior, who has a history of seizures, squeezed his father's hand several times. Knowing his son was alive, the father decided to give himself up.
George junior later made a full recovery.
George senior, meanwhile, was charged with two counts of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon. One charge was later dismissed, while the other was lessened.
He was released from jail earlier this month.
