BLOUNTSTOWN, FLORIDA — The Florida Department of Law Enforcement is investigating an incident where a sick woman was arrested and removed from a hospital before dying from a blood clot in her lung. Lawyers representing the family of Barbara Dawson, 57, believe negligence by the police and hospital caused her death on Monday.

Dawson checked herself into the small Liberty Calhoun Hospital in Blountstown, Florida because she was having difficulty breathing. After treating her, doctors thought she was stable and could leave. The nurse also refused to return her oxygen tank, saying Dawson was fine and that she didn't need it. But Dawson still felt ill and wanted to stay.
An argument ensued. According to Dawson's aunt, who was present on Monday, the 57-year-old had argued with nurses at the hospital many times before, and they called police to remove Dawson by force. However, when the officer escorted the her out in handcuffs, she asked for her oxygen again before collapsing.

Nurses took Dawson's pulse and insisted she was fine but Dawson was readmitted by a doctor anyway. The hospital says doctors detected Dawson's pulse at around 4:30 a.m., though Dawson's relative, who was present disputes that. When they checked her at 6:24 a.m., Dawson was dead.

Now the hospital and police are saying they did everything they could for Dawson, and that her excessive weight caused the fatal blood clot in her lung. Her family says handcuffing Dawson and kicking her out of the hospital led to her death.

The autopsy report and video from the officer's dashcam have not yet been released. State police are still investigating.
