KABUL — A clearer picture has emerged as to how a Taliban attacker on a motorcycle was able to kill six U.S. troops outside Bagram Airfield in Afghanistan on Monday, CNN reported.
The suicide bomber was able to pass through an initial perimeter of Afghan security because the explosives, which contained small metal balls, were packed inside his motorcycle, hiding them from Afghan security.
The six U.S. troops, all members of the Air Force or Air National Guard, were on a security patrol outside Bagram Airfield, walking in a narrow lane surrounded by walls, when the suicide bomber approached them and detonated the explosives.
This was the deadliest attack on foreign troops in Afghanistan since August this year. The Taliban claimed responsibility in a message posted on Twitter, the New York Times reported.
According to Reuters, more than 2,300 U.S. troops have died in Afghanistan since 2001. Although the number of deaths has been decreasing sharply since Washington announced the end of the conflict and began withdrawing U.S. troops, the Pentagon warned last week that the security situation is deteriorating.
Around 9,800 U.S. troops remain in the country, officially to train, assist and advise Afghan soldiers.
Bagram, around 40 kilometers (25 miles) north of Kabul, is one of the main bases in the country for U.S. troops.
