OLD BRIDGE, NEW JERSEY — A 7-year-old New Jersey girl dialed 911 in panic after she accidentally knock the Elf on the Shelf down with her ball, reported USA Today.

Isabelle LaPeruta was worried because according to the children's book, the magic of Christmas goes away if the elf is touched or moved. Isabelle's mother was asleep at the time so Isabelle called 911 but realized her mistake the moment the operator answered, said Old Bridge Police Lt. Joseph Mandola

"Don't come to my house," Isabelle said to the operator during the call. She explained that she was trying to call her dad to tell him about the accident and mistakenly dialed 911.

Police are required by law to investigate emergency calls so despite Isabelle's request, a police officer showed up at her house, said Mandola. He continue to explained that to isabelle, the fear that she ruined Christmas was her emergency, and the police found no fault in that.

Elf on the Shelf has caused a lot of controversy throughout the years. In 2014, Duffel Blog, a satirical website, reported on a fictitious claim by former NSA Contractor Edward Snowden that Elf on the Shelf was actually an intelligence gathering operation run by the NSA.

Even though the claim is untrue, digital technology professor Laura Pinto expressed her concern and told the Washington Post that "if a kid is okay with this bureaucratic elf spying on them in their home, it normalizes the idea of surveillance and in the future restrictions on our privacy might be more easily accepted."
