XI'AN, CHINA — More than a dozen dogs were left for dead on the roof of a medical school in China after the innocent canines were used for practical training experiments.

Animal activists encountered the disturbing scene on December 6 and found most dogs dead or dying from their wounds. Shanghaiist interviewed a participating med student at Xi'an Medical University, who said the dogs were having their appendixes cut open so the students could practice sutures. The dogs were bound at their mouths and bodies, to keep them from attacking from the pain.

A teacher at the university explained the dogs were not humanely euthanized because the school "didn't have the facilities." A photograph released appears to show one of the dogs being hanged by a group of people.

At least 19 dogs were found chained to the roof, alive and suffering, reportedly set to be used in future experiments. The university's license for carrying out experiments on animals is expired, and in response to the outcry over these sad and disturbing images, it has agreed to shut down all experiments involving animals, at least for the time being.
