FORSYTH COUNTY, NORTH CAROLINA — A six-year-old survived being dragged by a school bus for close to a mile in what some would describe as a miracle.

Forsyth County, North Carolina Union Cross Elementary School first grader Chelsea Klepzig was exiting a school bus on the afternoon of Monday, December 8, 2015, when the bus driver suddenly close the door, trapping the girl's arm.

Klepzig's grandmother, who was waiting for her in a vehicle near the bus stop, witnessed the horrific scene of her granddaughter being dragged by an apparently oblivious bus driver. The grandmother chased the bus, trying to get the driver's attention, but the driver continued to the next stop almost a mile away before becoming aware of the situation.

Chelsea's parents say they cannot understand how the driver could have not noticed that someone was trapped in the door. Chelsea suffered only minor scrapes and bruises, but pictures that show her sneakers shredded from being dragged along the pavement illustrate how close this incident became to becoming something significantly more horrific.

The driver a substitute who's been employed by the school system for 15 years, was suspended without pay and reports say he will likely be fired. State police are also investigating, but say it's too early to determine whether charges will be filed. Meanwhile, all parties are expressing relief that this young girl survived such a harrowing accident.
