USA — Following the recent shootings in Colorado Springs and San Bernardino, the security of routine environments such as medical centers and office buildings has been compromised. To combat those fears and anxieties, it is important to know the potential options at hand for escaping these deadly scenarios alive.

Experts say knowing where the exits are and how to get to them from anywhere in the vicinity is crucial. When faced with an active gunman, the next important decision comes down to three immediate options: run for the exits, hide under a desk or in an office or bathroom, or attack the attacker.

If the paths to the exits are not viable, and there’s nowhere to hide, the only option may be to fight. Improvising weapons such as chairs, fire extinguishers, a pen, a belt, or a coffee mug or glass will help offer innocent victims a fighting chance.

Furthermore, if there’s only one shooter, he or she can only shoot in one direction at a time. This leaves the attacker exposed in several angles, and if there are multiple people charging an assailant, chances of a takedown increase.

The odds of being faced with an active shooter situation may be slim, but knowing the options in advance is always worth being aware of. In life, anything could happen, at any given moment, as the murderous attacks on unsuspecting innocents over the past month have made clear.
