SAN FRANCISCO — Uber, the ridesharing app company, has announced that it will began testing a color-coded system they’re calling “SPOT.”

The idea was stemmed from the problem where riders sometimes get into the wrong vehicle or have difficulty finding the car they had requested. There’s also the issue of Uber scammers; drivers who pull up to a curb and allow people to enter their vehicle under the assumption it’s an Uber car.

To help rectify these issues, Uber has announced Uber drivers in Seattle will have LED light strips placed inside the vehicle’s windshield. When a customer requests a Uber ride via the app, they will be asked to choose a color. If the customer picks green, the Uber driver will flash a green LED light on the windshield when he or she arrives at the pickup location, helping the passenger more quickly identify which vehicle is intended for them.

Customer can also flash the same color on their phone and hold it up in a crowded area so that the driver and rider can connect more easily.

Uber says SPOT Will help trim down wait times and provide a more “seamless” experience. The company did not specify when others cities may also began using the SPOT feature.
