HURON, CALIFORNIA — Getting roasted in a chimney a month before Christmas is a nasty fate, but sadly the one suffered by an unidentified apparent would-be burglar who somehow got it into his head that climbing down a chimney would be the best way to break into a home.
In the wee hours of the morning on Saturday, November 28, 2015, authorities believe a man attempted to enter a home on the 16000 block of West Gale Avenue in the small rural California town of Huron by climbing down the chimney. It's believed the man then became stuck.
The homeowner, who returned to his house that afternoon, lit a fire in his fireplace, causing the home to immediately fill with black smoke … and the cries of the trapped burglar. The homeowner attempted to put out the fire and immediately called for help.
Arriving 10 minutes after the call, firefighters used tools to break into the chimney from the outside. Reports say the man was responsive at the beginning of the rescue effort, but by the time he had been pulled from the chimney, he had died.
An autopsy will be conducted. No further information was released by Fresno County Sheriff deputies regarding the identity of either the homeowner or the deceased suspect.
