LATAKIA, SYRIA — Russia announced on Wednesday that it would deploy anti-aircraft missiles in Syria near the Turkish border, a day after Turkey shot down a Russian military jet.

The S-400 defense missile system, also known as the SA-21 Growler, is a medium to long-range mobile surface-to-air missile system. The weapon will be deployed to the Hmeymim air base near Latakia in Syria, less than 30 miles away from the Turkish border, CNN reported.

According to missilethreat.com, the missiles have a known range of 155 miles and a possible range of 250 miles, meaning they can reach targets in southern Turkey.

The website states that the S-400 can be equipped with multiple missile variants and is capable of shooting down stealth aircraft, unmanned aerial vehicles, cruise missiles and sub-strategic ballistic missiles. It can also engage up to 36 targets simultaneously.

The announcement came after a Russian SU-24 fighter-bomber was shot down in Syria near the Turkish border after, Turkey claims, it was warned repeatedly about crossing into Turkish airspace on November 24.

"It looks very much like a planned provocation," CNN quoted Russia's Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov as saying. However, Turkish President claims the incident was an infringement of Turkey's sovereignty.

According to The Independent, Russia claims that the military jet was on an "anti-terror" mission when it was downed. Turkey stated that there was no Islamic State fighters in that area. The governments of Russia and Syria both refer to all armed militias and rebel groups in the country as terrorists area.
