Police investigators say Mariana Buendia was responsible for her own death even though Mexico’s Supreme Court considers her death a femicide, says Mariana’s mother and activist Irinea Buendia. The rate of femicides has remained the same for the last 15 years in a country with a 98% impunity rate. Although some officials point to the declaration of a gender alert five months ago as a sign that progress is being made, a large protest march organized on the International Day for the Elimination of Gender-Based Violence makes it clear that the problem is far from being eradicated. Clayton Conn reports from Mexico City for teleSUR.
