Towards the end of October, thousands of acre of land in Pampore near Srinagar is painted violet-purple by the blossoming saffron flowers. The flower picking season lasts over a fortnight and the flowers are generally picked in the morning. Saffron is the most expensive spice in the world but the farmers in recent times have been complaining about very low rates for their produce due to growing competition from Spanish saffron.
