BRUSSELS — Brussels remained on high alert Monday, the third day of a security lockdown, as authorities hunted a terror suspect amid warnings of a possible attack similar to the ones that killed 130 people in Paris on November 13.

Belgian police carried out a series of 19 raids on properties throughout the capital overnight, arresting a total of 16 people but failing to locate Salah Abdeslam, a Belgian-born French national wanted for his alleged role in the Paris attacks.

Armored vehicles and hundreds of soldiers patrolled the streets of Brussels for a third day as the city remained on its highest state of alert.

Prime MInister Charles Michel told a press conference, "We fear an attack similar to the one in Paris, with several individuals who could possibly launch several attacks at the same time in multiple locations."

The threat means the city's Metro, museums, schools, and many shops were to stay closed.

Commenting on the raids and the failure to turn up Abdeslam, Belgian Interior Minister Jan Jambon said that Abdeslam "must have a lot of support on our territory. That's why all these searches being conducted at the moment are important."
