Ndërprerjet e shtatzënive pas mësimit te gjinisë se fetusit, janë cilësuar si vepra penale nga ministria e shëndetësisë. Dhe kjo pasi abortet lejohen vetëm ne 12 javët e para te ngjizjes se fëmijës, ndërkohe qe gjinia është e vështire te përcaktohet ne këtë periudhe. Duke ju referuar një rezolute te pak kohëve me pare te këshillit te Evropës ku kërkohej te ndalohej me ligj zbulimi i gjinisë, ministri i shëndetësisë Petrit Vasili pohoi se është i hapur ndaj këtij diskutimi. Sipas te dhënave nga maternitetet ne vend, gjysma e aborteve i dedikohen seksit te padëshiruar te fëmijës. Ne rezolutën e këshillit te Evropës theksohej se ne një grup vendesh përfshire Shqipërinë, prindërit ndërpresin shtatzëninë me se shumti kur mësojnë se presin vajze. Megjithatë kontrolli i aborteve do te jete me i plote pas dy viteve, kur ky veprim do te behet vetëm ne institucionet shtetërore. Ne kuadër te kujdesit për nenën dhe fëmijën ministria e shëndetësisë ka nënshkruar edhe një marrëveshje bashkëpunimi me organizatën "World Vision".
