NEWTON, IOWA — Speaking to an NBC reporter on Thursday during a campaign stop in Newton, Iowa, Republican front-runner Donald Trump, in words condemned by both Democratic and Republican Party presidential candidates, said he would "certainly implement" a mandatory registration for Muslims in America, according to a New York Times report.
"There should be a lot of systems, beyond databases," continued the real estate mogul in the brief interview, which he has since distanced himself from. " We should have a lot of systems."
The statements, which come in the wake of last week's deadly Paris attacks, were slammed from all sides by the likes of Hillary Clinton, Bernie Sanders, Jeb Bush and even Trump buddy Ted Cruz.
"I'm a big fan of Donald Trump's but I'm not a fan of government registries of American citizens," said Cruz, speaking to reporters in Iowa, according to USA Today. "The First Amendment protects religious liberty, I've spent the past several decades defending religious liberty."
Following the backlash, Trump took to Twitter on Friday and implied he'd been the victim of leading questions by the NBC reporter.
"I didn't suggest a database-a reporter did," wrote Trump. "We must defeat Islamic terrorism & have surveillance, including a watch list, to protect America."
