US House passes bill to halt process of accepting Syrian, Iraqi refugees

The US House of Representatives has voted on a bill requiring security screening for Syrian and Iraqi refugees that is so strict and comprehensive that it effectively blocks President Barack Obama’s refugee settlement plan. The US was planning to accept 30,000 refugees from Syria in 2016, after hundreds of thousands flooded into Europe this summer. Now 31 states say they want to put a halt to their resettlement in the US or even stop it completely, citing concerns over potential terrorism.
