Expanding the vocabulary of your students is a certain way to improve their English language skills. You can do this in a fun way using a deck of cards. The activity involves assigning letters to the 13 cards of a normal playing deck.
The key is to assign 2 different letters to each card, not necessarily in sequence. Write the card name and the letters you have assigned on the board…
Team 1 - team 2

Ace = E & F
2 = I & Y
3 = A & J
4 = O & B
write all 13 on the board
Divide students into two teams…
Choose a category…
Sport
When you pick a card, each team can use the letters assigned to their column.
Shuffle the cards and draw one.
Ask your students to come up with a word, one for each team but related to the category. For instance, if you draw 4, one team can call out ‘Outfield’ while the other says ‘Baseball’.
To make it more fun, assign points for each correct answer and set a time limit. You can assign different categories to each team or even have multiple categories to make the game more comprehensive.
