Shocking footage has emerged of a driver running over a large alligator on a motorway in Florida, US.

The video, filmed on a dash-cam in Cocoa on Tuesday, shows the Chevrolet Cruze - travelling between Cocoa and Orlando - driving along the road before striking the five-metre long reptile.

A tragic still photograph, which some people may find disturbing, at the end of the video also features the alligator after it had been hit by the car.
