FOX LAKE, ILLINOIS — The hero-cop narrative that was used to describe the death of Fox Lake Police Lt. Charles Joseph Gliniewicz in September has took a shocking turn on Wednesday after police announced that the 52-year-old police officer had in fact, staged his own death.
Gliniewicz staged a trail leading up to his suicide by radioing in for backup on the morning of September 1, saying that he was pursuing three suspects. Responding officers later found his body in a remote, marshy area where there was no trace of the suspects.
In the two-month-long investigation following Gliniewicz's death, police analyzed GPS data showing that the 32-year police veteran was on foot near the crime scene for 20 minutes before he radioed in. Reuters reports that police also determined that Gliniewicz used his own gun to first shoot the right side of his bulletproof vest before fatally shooting himself in the chest.
According to the Washington Post, Gliniewicz used his experience of staging mock crime scenes with the police department to stage police equipment and his glasses at the crime scene so that there appeared to have been a struggle before the fatal shot.
Police say that Gliniewicz had stolen thousands of dollars from the police department for personal purposes including mortgage payments, traveling and adult websites. Gliniewicz has also been found guilty of forging signatures and official documents, and may have committed suicide once it became clear he may face consequences for his criminal behavior.
