New research suggests diamonds may be formed in much greater numbers than previously thought.

A study recently published in the journal Nature Communications offers a new theory of diamond formation suggesting that they could be quite common deep inside the Earth's mantle.
Researchers employed a chemical model to demonstrate that the precious stones may form due to decline in pH levels—or increase in acidity—during interactions between water and rock.
