It wasn’t a red carpet moment but a pink carpet one, which brought together so many amazing women at Governor House for the 7th Ladiesfund Women’s Award 2015.
Thanking Sindh governor Dr Ishrat Ul Ibad Khan for his hospitality and support, president of the Dawood Global Foundation Tara Uzra Dawood joked over how she got the governor slightly worried when she told him that she wanted to turn the historical premises all pink and white.

Speaking from a podium decorated with pink and white flowers, the governor said the government supported emancipation of women. “With help from the CPLC, I have set up a special helpline for women at Governor House here,” he said while appreciating the contributions of his guests in all walks of life.

Besides presenting awards and scholarships to poets, writers, social entrepreneurs, artists, fashion designers, doctors, educationalists, trailblazers, achievers and women of inspiration, the evening also saw the naming of two lifetime achievement winners — artist, textile designer and researcher Noorjehan Bilgrami and veteran journalist Zubeida Mustafa.

“It’s sheer passion that has carried me through four decades of work discovering crafts and craftsmen and experimenting with prints and printing while documenting such processes as I carry out my research. And the journey continues,” said Ms Bilgrami.

“As I receive my lifetime achievement award I cannot forget other great journalists such as Razia Bhatti and Najma Sadeque, both my contemporaries, who also worked very hard while facing several hardships.

There used to be very few women journalists when I stepped into journalism, there used to be very few women in the field. Being a journalist isn’t easy. It presents several challenges but then you also get to meet so many interesting people through this profession,” said Zubeida Mustafa.

Rights activist and journalist Najma Sadeque, who recently passed away, was also honoured with the courage award. Brig Tariq Saeed received his late wife Saima Tariq’s award. Saima Tariq, a brave teacher at the Army Public School in Peshawar, lost her life while saving the lives of her 27 students on Dec 16, 2014.

Among the others who received their awards were Namira Salim, Pakistan’s first astronaut, dress designer Naushaba Brohi, whose designs have also been worn by actor George Clooney’s better half Amal.

There were scholarships worth $10,000 awarded to 10 girls who wanted to study journalism. Ladiesfund’s special zakat fund that prioritises keeping deserving girls, unable to afford their tuition fee, in school was distributed among seven girls including three special children.

The scholarships were also awarded to seven-year-old Ambreen and six-year-old Mawasir, children of the late female polio worker Akbari Jumman, who were there with their father, Ibrahim Jumman.
