It is estimated that 52% of Bolivian women suffer physical and sexual abuse at the hands of their husbands or partners, with 10 deaths reported each month. In 2013 a law was approved defining femicide as a crime punishable with a 30-year prison sentence. The government reports that femicides since then have dropped considerably but critics say not much has changed. Indeed, only 6% of cases reported to authorities go to trial.
