While today's elections in Colombia are on a local and regional level, they are nonetheless of key importance as they are the first since the government and rebels began peace talks in 2012. Voters will cast ballots for governors of the country's 32 states, mayors, city and town councilmen, and other offices. President Juan Manuel Santos emphasized the importance of today's vote as those elected will be responsible for implementing the final peace settlement agreement, expected to be signed by March.
