KANSAS CITY, MISSOURI-- A Kansas City, Missouri, police officer was denied service at an Olive Garden restaurant over the weekend, and now a hostess at the chain is in hot water because of the incident, according to local news reports.
On Sunday, decorated KC Police officer Michael Holsworth wanted to enjoy dinner on his birthday with his family at Olive Garden. But when he arrived early, the hostess at the front desk saw his service pistol and told him guns aren't allowed in the restaurant. Holsworth confirmed she wasn't joking, then offered to leave. "Yes, please leave, said the woman."
Although it's true guns make some diners uncomfortable, the uncomfortable gun is exactly the reason why you DO want cops to frequent your restaurant. Having a police officer present before a robbery occurs is preferable to having a vigilante customer whip out their weapon and start shooting.
With his birthday ruined, Officer Holsworth went home and wrote about it on Facebook. His post went viral, and everybody was complaining about Olive Garden, now with just cause.
Sensing an unfolding public relations disaster, the president of Olive Garden, Dave George, personally called Officer Holsworth to apologize, according to a company Twitter account. The chain wants cops to know they are welcome in the restaurant with their guns.
For his part, Officer Holsworth updated his Facebook page, saying he hopes the media will report about police "in a more positive direction, so this type of situation does not occur in the future."
