The release of insurgents who took up arms against the state in Peru has been extremely controversial. Bernardo Roque of the Tupac Amaru Revolutionary Movement (MRTA) was released after serving a 15 year prison term, and Peter Cardenas, of the same organization, was released after serving a 25-year sentence. Both have faced widespread social condemnation and are frequently confused with guerrillas of the Maoist Shining Path. This is very different than the situation in other Latin American countries, where combatants frequently enjoy respect and are integrated into the society. Rael Mora reports from Lima for teleSUR.
