Hajj: questions raised over death toll

Foreign officials have raised questions about the official death toll from the deadly stampede at this year’s Hajj pilgrimage near Mecca.

Saudi Arabia says 769 people died in the crush last Thursday. But Indonesian, Indian and Pakistani officials are on record as saying they now think more than a thousand were killed.

Tariq Fazal Chaudhry from Pakistan’s governing PML-N party said: “The Saudi government has released pictures of 1,100 martyrs from countries around the world. 1,100 pictures of Hajjis who were murdered in Mina. These pictures are available at our embassy in Jeddah.”

The Saudi authorities say the higher figure includes deaths from natural causes and 109 people who perished when a crane collapsed at the Grand Mosque.

Iran, Saudi Arabia’s regional rival, lost 228 citizens in the stampede.
