A man has been shot dead in a confrontation with police at a post office in Warners Bay on Wednesday afternoon.
Police confirmed the man, who was a postal worker, died at the scene after a
police firearm was discharged after he allegedly threatened staff with a
butcher's knife.
Police shot the man three times about 3.20pm on Wednesday.
Two officers, who appear to be in plain clothes, first approached the
man in the carpark before they follow him down a back lane.
The man with the knife disappears out of view before returning with the
knife raised above his head as he moves quickly towards one of the
officers.
He gets close to that officer before he is shot and falls to the ground.
Police confirmed the man had died and an investigation was underway to determine the events leading up to the shooting.
In a video that purports to show the man's final moments before he
was shot, several police officers appear to have their firearms drawn.
Shouts of: "Put it down ... put the knife on the ground" can be heard in the
video that appears to have been shot on a smartphone from a car park
just metres away from the police operation.
Police appear to yell "c'mon mate. You don't want to do this ... Put
it on the ground or we'll shoot" before three shots ring out.An
eye witness to the police shooting in Warners Bay has described the
victim looking "distressed" in the minutes before he was gunned down.
The witness, who did not want to be named, was standing in the car park
across from the post office when she saw a man "holding a butcher's
knife to what looked like a staff member".
