September 11 was the 42 anniversary of the military coup that toppled the democratically elected government of Chilean president Salvador Allende. During the coup and its aftermath Allende and thousands of others were killed. Former political prisoners of the Augusto Pinochet dictatorship paid tribute to Allende and current president Michelle Bachelet, who was herself tortured, headed up a ceremony in Santiago to honor the martyred socialist leader. teleSUR
