Unarmed white South Carolina teen killed by police over 10 grams of weed - TomoNews

SENECA, SOUTH CAROLINA — The shooting death of an unarmed teenager, killed by a South Carolina police officer who claims he feared for his life, is again raising troubling questions regarding the use of deadly force. An independent autopsy has also cast doubt on the officer’s account of what happened that night.

Zachary Hammond, 19, was shot and killed on the evening of June 26. Zachary was on a first date with 23-year-old Tori Morton and as the couple sat in a Hardee’s fast food restaurant parking lot, police approached the couple in an undercover marijuana sting operation. Morton had 10 grams of marijuana on her, the Washington Post s.

During the bust, Zachary Hammond was shot twice. Police say he attempted to flee and drove his car towards a police officer. Seneca police chief John Covington said the officer, who has not yet been named, opened fire in self-defense.

The Hammond family attorney, Eric Bland, told the Washington Post that physical evidence clearly contradicts the official account of what transpired that evening. The local corner has also ruled the death a homicide.

Local authorities say the case is under investigation and that dash-cam video footage of the incident may be released at a later date.
